Rear main seal question.

Default Rear main seal question.

I'm going to be putting in a new clutch soon and was thinking about replacing the rear main seal at the same time. Do I need to remove the oil pan to do so? If I do have to remove the pan, then does the engine need to be lifted up in order to get it off of there or no?

EDIT: If it's not leaking should I just leave it alone or go ahead and replace it? The car has 82,xxx miles.

Well, you have to remove the oil pan, which would require lifting the engine, which would be a pain in the ***....if you had a 85 or older block, which if you have a LT1 is not possible. No, the seal pops out and you (carefully) place the new one in, i say while it is apart you might as well replace it, in 10-20k miles it starts to leak you would think"man i shoulda replaced that ******"

But, the one piece rear main seals are pretty good, they usually only leak due to poor maintenance or severe abuse over a period of time, it is so cheap you really might as well.

I've taken the pan off of mine before with the engine still in the car. Lossen up the motor mounts and lift the engine up to gain some extra clearence. Its not a bad job, but not an easy one either.
Also, if you were going to take the pan off, I would change the oil pump as well. Wouldn't hurt either way, but if it went out a few K miles later you would have wished you would have.

Sweet, thanks man. I knew about the older engines but I wasn't sure about LT1s. I think I'm gonna go order up a new rear main seal at the dealer tomorrow. Is there anything better than stock that I should know about before I go do that?

Thanks for the info. I'm not taking the pan off though unless I need to in order to get at the rear main seal or see a bad leak in the pan gasket.

Some aftermarkt seals offer a bit wider sealing surface, but i never had a problem with the stockers.
