Default Best headers for '95 LT1?

My buddy is currently running a Comp cam (224/236 .502/.520 114), a K&N air filter, and a Flowmaster muffler and is in need of some headers bad! I believe the only thing that he changed out as far as valvetrain goes, is the springs. Sooner or later he will be throwing a cat-back on it, but for now, we're trying to concentrate on some headers. Im not too familiar with LT1s as I am with LS1s, so if you would please, give me your opinion on which set of headers would be best. When I say the best, I mean: best fit, no clearance problems, dont hang down too far, fairly easy install, no major problems, put out the best numbers, show significant gains, etc. Do they make header kits as they do for LS1s? (Ex: FLPs-long tubes, bigger y-pipe, and interchageable high flow cats and off-road pipes, all with v-flanged ends and fully ceramic coated? I think a set up like that would be really nice for my buddy, if not too expensive. Do they make longtubes for LT1s? I think those would show more gains than mids or shorties, dont ya think? Or, if the best ones are too expensive for my buddy's budget, then which ones are the "best bang for the buck?" Thanks in advance. Any help is much appreciate.

Hooker longtubes are the best bang for the buck and will prolly give you the most power. If you want the second best, go with ASM. ASM has interchangeable cats with straight pipes, off road y-pipes, off road competition versions, etc. They are top notch as well and come coated, but they are pricey. Cant beat their quality though.

I changed from Edelbrock headers to The hooker longtubes. And they are alot better. Dont bother getting any type of Jet hot coating.

Ditto whats been said except for the one about no coating. I've come to see Jet Hot's coating isn't tops but you definitely need some type of coating (not spray on from Auto Zone) or the headers won't last a year unless you never drive your car.

The ASM sounds good, just for the fact that its a whole kit and everything is interchangeable. Are the ends v-flanged? If not, how do they interchange? What does ASM stand for and do they have a site? Are the ASM headers longtube, mids, or shorties? Anyone running these? Are they ceramic coated? Any problems with these headers? Do they have to bungs for the EGR and AIR? Im not sure if a '95 will have them, I was just curious. Thanks.

I've never heard too many people impressed with the ASM (Arizona Speed & Marine) headers. Especially when you factor in the price. They are "shorties", FYI.

Pretty much any manufacturer of LS1 headers will have an LT1 version. If he wants long tubes, Hooker is very popular. However, Jet-Hot recently started making LT headers and so far the reviews have been excellent. Basically, Jet-Hot took the design of the Hookers and tweaked them for a better fit and ground clearance and a little better build quality.

I have MAC shorties on my car and they are quality headers. Great plug access and fairly easy to install.

In the mean time, tell him to look into a cutout. It's a cheap and easy mod (for any muffler place) and should free up some horses.

Good luck!

I run Lemon headers and by far one of the best flowing headers on the market! 2" primaries stepped and with a 4" collector. They will make the headers what ever diam. you request and Lemon offers a set for the F-body LT1/LT4. But on the pricy side!

I have the ASM, they are AWESOME. Just FYI, they are Mid Lengths. put them up against any shorty header and they are notciably longer. not sure what you mean by V-Flanges but they arent ball flanges. 3 bolts to every flange in a triangular pattern. the coating is top notch. they are 1 3'4ths primaries as opposed to 1 5/8ths which all other brands that arent longtubes have, and the welds and collectors are top notch. i have never heard a single complaint from any owner of ASM's other than the fact they didnt put out as much as Longtubes(for the obvious reason that they arent long tubes). most all the fastest cars had them until the hooker longtubes came out if that means anything. All bungs come on the headers from ASM(air pump and 02 sensors) and they come with Random Tech. catalytic converters. Everything bolts right up and the fit/finish(coating) on them were superb. I will never change headers unless i go with longtubes in which case ill go with Hookers but thats down the road if at all. ASM is Arizona Speed and Marine.

Hookers don't come with 02 bungs, so you'll either have to install them in the collectors (which screws up the coating) or put them in the y-pipe.
The Jet Hot headers have the 02 bungs in the collectors.
Also, if smog testing is an issue, longtubes may not pass a visual inspection.

i wish i had a set of stepped Lemon's . will next year. currently have 1-7/8 into 3.5" Hedman Husslers which woke the car up quite a bit compared to the Hooker LTs. for the combo you are working on though i would definitly recomment the Hooker LTs over any sort of shorty/mid length headers. and somebody mentioned the edelbrocks.... dont even think if getting those peices of crap. in addition to being small and crappy design, whoever made them must have assumed you will never have to change your spark plugs

not sure if your still looking but check out Jethot's new header for the LT1 and now LS1 as well. They went into the manufacturing business and are building them identical to Hooker but 16 vs 18 guauge and thicker flanges. I bought mine for $519.00 with AIR injectors, EGR, both pre-cat 02 bungs, jethotted and shipped to my door for that price. I gained 3/10ths in the 1/4 with the longtubes and a custom 3" y with no cats. I was already running open Borla prior headers, so the gains were strictly a header addition and times were from HRP. INCREDIBLE gains for just headers.
