big opti/cam swap dilemma
My 94 formy is stock and is starting to show signs of an opti failing.(high and low res failure codes)
my dilemma is I have everything for a vented opti swap minus the cam. I am planning on doing headers and 3.73's and a stall within the next few months and then porting heads soon after. i want the car to be at 400-450 rwhp after the mods are done.
dilemma dilemma ... what would you recommend for a cam. the car will be a semi daily driver with trips to the track.
i want the car to be decent after the cam/opti swap. and i want it to really wake up with headers and then gears and then stall.
in other words i wouldn't mind choking the cam a bit for the short term. i would really like a cc306 or gm 847 or cams in that range but that might be way to aggressive.
the car will be tuned for the cam at each stage ie pre headers then post headers.
recommendations please

The 306/847 is too big, aim smaller.
Your goal of an off the shelf cam now and then throw heads at it later for 400-450rwhp is a bit unrealistic as well.
I understand why you are doing this a little out of order, not ideal but I appreciate the effort to buy parts once and do some of the work just once, you understand it is not ideal the order you are having to do it so I think overall you are off to a decent start.
Just need to work on the cam selection.
Honestly even with heads I would say 306ish is the max you should go and with the stock compression and such you will have for now a big cam like that will suck and drive terrible. If you go a little smaller it can drive OK for now and still scream later, the cam I am running is pretty close to the Comp 503 if you look at most of the commonly posted specs.
I would look at something like the Comp 503, or maybe the 846 on the smaller side.
Another option would be too see what cam you can find used CHEAP for now.
then later when you do the heads pull the engine swap cams again and put a new oilpump spring in it.

For 95 you need the long dowel pin, but it can't be too long or it'll destroy the opti. Check out this site for a ton of info: www.shbox.com
