Default 1994 Z-28 progress...

Well, the exhaust and intake I ordered for the '94 finally showed up a few days ago, and yesterday I tackled putting them in. The car had previously had an SLP intake and a home-brew exhaust on it. The home brewed exhaust consisted of 2 3" cherry bomb mufflers, in-line, that sounded horrible. Like "I'm a teenager with no money and a yearn for loudness" horrible.

So I ordered a Magnaflow stainless exhaust and a Lingenfelter intake for it. The magnaflow seemed to fit like a glove, until I looked at the back of the car... One tailpipe was about 2" further away from center than the other. So I loosened everything back up to re-position, and found that it was as square as I could make it; the tailpipe on the drivers side wasn't bent far enough. So, with the help of the handle from my floor jack and a few cuss words, I managed to bend it to where it ought to be.

You'd figure these exhaust companies would quality control things a bit better than they do.

The SLP intake that was on the car is a complete joke. It consists of 2 2.25" pipes merging into a 3.5" or so 'collector' that connects to the mass air meter. The filters are two small K&N knockoffs. To put it in perspective, they looked like the filters I had on my 1984 Ninja 900R years ago. The tubing is all steel, and it weighs a *ton*, on top of the fact that it rubbed and rattled against a bunch of stuff; the radiator support, the ABS module... The Lingenfelter unit is ABS plastic, weighs next to nothing, and actually fits... It's tight, but it fits. The filter is a rather large K&N unit about 6"-7" in diameter and about 11" long. It *has* to breather better than the SLP unit.

The Magnaflow exhaust sounds nice. Still 'loud' but a refined loud, without the rasp or obnoxiousness of the old exhaust. The intake seems to be making more power according to my butt-dyno.

Also, while I was under there, I greased anything with a zerk fitting, tightened up a few loose hear shields, and generally fixed a couple of rattles that were driving me nuts.

I was so excited to be working on a car again that I worked straight through lunch, completely forgot to eat.

All the magnaflow exhaust tips are crooked. At least everyone Ive ever seen has the same problem you described. Good to hear about the improvements! Keep it up!

I agree on the SLP intake. When I got my Z, it was one of the first things I took off and threw on Ebay. If I had a stockish LT1 or LS1 I would probably either try Magnaflow or Corsa.

Yeah, the Magnaflow sounds sweet. Still has a 'rumble' but it's more refined and hot-rod sounding.

There was a definite power increase from the Lingenfelter intake.

Hopefully they aren't as off center as much as mine:

Even with the new Magnaflow muffler, they're still off center, which bothers the hell out of me so I'm going to get it fixed...again. But the Magnaflow sounds even better after a month of use.

BTW, I just went with the Magnaflow muffler and Magnaflow dual tips instead of the entire catback because I didn't care for the "truck cannon" tips. LOL

Holy crap, that's *way* off. My exhaust was 'only' off about 2"-3".
