Default Side exit exhaust?

I was thinking of doing side exit (right in front of the rear tires)exhaust on my car. How many have tried this? I think Tony Shepherd's car is done this way. I don't plan to lower the car, and would like to have a little clearance. If anybody's tried this, how was the clearance? Post any pics if anyone has some. There is a pic on Tony's website showing the underside of his car during a wheelstand . That's the only one I can find.

I personally have not seen this done but I wanted to do it when I had my sisters exhaust put on her Z and not one shop out here would do it. They all said it can't be done and they wouldnt even try it. I honestly think it would work fine. It couldnt be any worse than TDs. It would look bad ***.

I never thought of it until I saw this: http://www.fast93z.com/pictures/album.php?id=9# (look at either one of the launch pics) I have always thought side exit looks the best!

It will kill your ground clearance. Speed bumps would suck.

I'm not that big of a fan of the both side thing. My friend used to have his setup with true duals that both pipes exited on the passenger's side. You could also do something with a boom tube. I'm still contemplating that.

One of the only reasons I was able to go with the side exhaust is because I am running 29.5" slicks. That tall of a slick raises the back of the car a little giving room for the side exhaust. You should hear it! It sounds mean as hell!

You can hear it here:

You can see it in this poster pic:

A while back I had seen a guy that did the side exhaust on his 4th gen and he used square pipe like they use in NASCAR. It looked real nice and the ground clearance loss was minimal. Just an idea, but I am sure the square pipe will be hard to find.

AKA boom tube like I was talking about earlier.

I've got 3" TD with a side exit...I don't have any pix yet (I have posted the exhaust when it was dumped, though)...Basically, the pipe exits the mufflers and does a 180 back towards the front of the car and then makes a 90 and out the sides between the door and the rear tire...We back cut the pipe about 2" under the car until we decide on what tips, if any to use...I run 28" M/T radials, but never scraped when it had the 26"s either..The work was done by Performance Auto Fab, who is now a sponsor>>>>>>>>>

There was a bunch of folks from here who saw the exhaust in May in OC, MD...It sounds great with zero resonance (Edelbrock SDT 304s) and now makes gas tank removal (when it becomes necessary) not such a pain...I think it looks real cool back cut under the car a few inches...I have a Formula with no ground effects so a polished tip sticking out looks kinda funny...I have contemplated making tips from 3" round to 3" oval transitions from Spin Tech and then powder coating them black bringing them to the edge of the car on an angle to follow the body lines...That way they do their job and are more invisible....

Yeah, I street drive it all the time...It spends more time on the street than at the track...Everything is tucked up about as high as you can get it...It was fine with the 26" tires, but it's outstanding with the 28"s...

Those are pretty cool looking too. They'd be nice to integrate into a side skirt or part of the body on a camaro.

That looks awesome, I have thought alot recently about putting side exhaust out the passenger side, but that would invole me cutting the side skirt for any clearance at all, and I'm not willing to do that yet...

So according to those other threads that were linked, boom tubes are stupid loud? I like how they look, I don't think I can swing the price though. Looks like a really simple way to run duals, but insanely loud.

I'm planning on running a 3 inch entrance y pipe with a 3 to 2.5 x 4 oval exit into a dr gas boom tube. The one I want supposedly has a built in muffler, but it's still pretty small.
