Default Engine Blew - What to do??

Im asking for a friend, blew his engine (97 z28). overheated it. Dealership quoted like $5700. Im an ls1 guy so im not familiar with the lt1 world.

What options does he have? Is there a good place to buy a new longblock from? What rebuilding options are there and what would labor be on something like that? This is my boss's son, so i dont want to give him any crappy advice, lol

Well depending on how long he drove it, might just need head gaskets and not a long block.

if he wants a entire new motor, and wants power, tell him to look into golen racing engines with lloyd elliots heads/cam combo or buy a shortblcok and use AI heads/cam to make everyone happy.

i think his dad is just looking for a stock engine replacement if it needs it. I dont have a lot of the details and i never saw the car so i dont know if the dealer is trying to take them to the cleaners or not. im just trying to figure out some solutions with price ranges cause hes not gonna want to spend $5.5k on a car worth 8k

About how much would labor costs be to pull the old engine and drop in a new one?

Over here labor is $1,200 to do engine swaps. You can find lt1 shortblocks all over for cheap prices. I find them all the time in the 500 price range

Thanks, i should have asked earlier, but if you bought the rebuild kit, about how much would labor be to put it all in?

Every shop has different prices. About 5 years ago before my uncle sold me his 94 z28. He actaully blew the engine - so what he said. The first place he saw he took his car to. Which was the hole-in-the-wall engine shop. When it was all said and done they charged him $7,500 to replace the shortblock. Yeah $7,500 for a stock shortblock and the worst part was it was used - not brand new. He still was having problems with the car so he decided to sell it to me. Turned out the optispark was bad and the timing was way off.

So is it going to be cheaper after labor to rebuild it or to just drop in a new engine?

Well like I said, it might not need a rebuild. But if you go the shortblock or longblock route, that might be easier if you don't really know what you are doing.

If so, head gasket repair with heads resurfaced = $1500. (At least that's what it cost me.)

Like other people have already asked, is he sure the engine is blown?

I think even with a small amount of mechanical ability one could do head gaskets. That being said, gaskets are about $36 a pair (Fel Pro laminated). Replace the head bolts $26 (GM 12495499). Resurface heads ~$120. Then all you have left in cost is coolant, probably change the oil afterward.

Hopefully all he did was overheat it and not shoot Rods out of the side of it..

If it's completely gone..let me "Merv" it...

Head gasket swap on these cars isn't easy. LOTS of stuff to remove. You will need tools of course. If you are good with cars, have some patience, and have tools go for it. I spent maybe 700$ on my head gasket swap. That included a new radiator, wp, opti, thermo stat, head work, and gaskets.
