massive ticking
massive ticking I have a ticking sounders like a loose lifter possibly how would you guys go about finding out let it run and check while feeling or do it woith the motor off and cold? it sounds like it is getting louder but possible just becasue i know it's there now it's bugging me i think it just started when i changed oil from m1 10w30 to pennoil 20w50

it could be a lifter, or it could be something else in the valvetrain. it could also be a blown exhaust gasket, as people often mistake ticking sounds for other things.
im 100% sure it's not an eaxust leak. will these rocker's sling alot of oil? or should i go get the catchers's i know on my other motor with the rr it kept the oil tammed it didnt fling it everywhere, or are the stock rockers just roller tip not full roller?

are you sure its a rocker because my car was making a noise and it kept getting louder and louder and i thought it was a rocker forsure it sounded nasty when i was on the gas then i let off and it go away turns out it was a messed up tensioner pulley check it out that could be it

sorry to temporarily hijack the thread, but this reminded me... i have 1.6 RRs and want to check a ticking sound and valve lash. i hear so many people say to check with the valve covers off. won't that throw up oil all over? how do i check with oil slinging everywhere? thanks guys. sorry to hijack... lol
like i said i switched from m1 my oil pressure was way low at hot idle now with the pennzoil it's about 12psi now i even let it get up to 220 as i never let it go past 180ish i was going to do it this morning but got a late start and then decided to go to the mountains so i'll prolly hit it tom...
also i've notice the damn think feels like im driving around with my brakes on??? i also have a vibration wich gets worse with rpm's is it likly for the harmonic b to give out early?
it only has 115k maintance records were kept from birth

You could get away with a high pressure oil pump(NOT Hi-Volume).
But this is not a true fix....it just buys you a little bit of time..and requires u drop the oil pan.
But if your ticking and it's getting louder then it's too late...u threw a rod bearing....and continueing to drive it could score your crank beyond repair.

well i think i confuesed most i know it's not a rod or mains i've spun both before on 2 other motors i have a magnitic oil plug and i get no shavings on it between changes and my oil is farily clean when i change it. the ticking sounds like a loose rocker or lifter going out and i think that i fubared the flywheel again for some reason i remember it kinda feeling the same way before i got the new clutch p plate and flywheel replaced 10k ago. i think its my brain messing with me i hate seeing 115k on the od so every rattle or noise i hear my brain make;s me thik it 10x worse

Would the check engine light come on? I have a ticking noise too. You cant really hear it unless u put ur ear to the valve cover, and it's a rebuilt with only 10,xxx miles. Could it be that i switched from 91 octane to 89 octane gas.

Wrong! The whole point for using 20w50 is if you dont drive the car everyday oil stays in the lifters. Also for track use when you start the car up run it hard and shut it down. Higher wieght Oil will tend to stay in places where thinner oil wont for long periods of time. If you have a high volume oil pump to run this thicker oil, should have no problems just added protection!
yea man if your pressure is low 20w-50 is the answer....not long term but short term.....
If u run a hi-pressure pump you'll be able to go back to normal 10w-30 and or 1 quart of 20w50.........
As a matter of fact I do this...but I installed mine before my pressure got as bad as yours.......and I'm at 25-30psi at idle....on straight 10w-30 now.
The weights each have their applications.....and flowing less or more is mythological.
It buys some time.....but not a lot....want more time? buy a beater car.

Check your spark plugs. My #7 blew out and ruined the 561 casting head. Now I have a set off a 94 vette that go on. I heard the same exact thing you are hearing. Doesn't hurt to eliminate this off the list. Let us know what you find out.
