Default Crank Snout Damage!

I have just bought a 96 Impala SS for next to nothing, but it was having some issues. The guy I bought it from changed the front seal and ever since couldn't keep the hub on. I was hopeing it would be a simple fix. but it looks like I may have to pull the engine. First off I pulled the hub off and it was a short style(Camaro/TA style), so I looked around and found the stock one In the trunk. Both where damaged from spinning on the snout. I got to looking at the crank snout and Its a little scared, but what scares me is that there is a taper about a 1/4" from the edge. I grabbed my calipers and the snout diameter is 1.2250 and at the edge its 1.200. So im almost sure a new keyed hub would just get damaged if I use it. Any suggestions or anyone else had this happen the point of crank damage? Sad part is the car runs like a dream, but I can't complain on the price.

Man that sucks, but I would try a keyed hub before I pulled the motor and tore it down.

I just checked three stock cranks. All were 1.243" - 1.245". I also checked two stock hubs and one ATI hub. All were 1.243" ID. It almost sounds like the previous owner polished the snout to get the damper to go on easier. I don't know that there is an easy solution to your problem.

Good luck,

Daren

Yeah I need a new crank. I'm just either going to pull it and rebuild the whole engine or look for a lower mile used engine. I'm not looking for performance so much on this car, thats what the WS6 and GTO is for.

Damn, that sucks. Leave it a lazy ******* to cheat and **** up a important part.

He might as well have snapped the bolt in the crank too.

On a side note ive seen a crank get worn down if a car had a blower with no Pin kit for the S/C pulley/dampener

Maybe a speedy sleeve can fix it. I dunno. It will probably be about $20.00. Maybe it's worth a shot.

Pioneer makes keyed balancer hubs for LT1s. I haven't seen one in person so I'm not sure on the quality but I would imagine it's good. Just something you may look into, if it isn't TOO worn. Having a keyed hub would maybe let you stick with this crank.
