Lt4????
Bought a motor from a salvage yard out of a 96 TA. Main reason for buying it was for the Aluminum heads. Started taking it apart, got to the oil pan and to my surprise, it had 4 bolt main caps. does this mean that it is a LT4 block? I tryed looking the block numbers up but they did tell me to much about it. Also there is a date stamped on the block 08/18/98...not really understanding that number. Block #10125327, Crank #14088526, heads #12551561. If anyone has info on these numbers or know's were I can get info on them I would appreciate it. I will post some pictures of the motor later.

The warranty replacement motors were 4-bolt and all the blocks are the same casting so you probably got a motor from a car that was wailed on till the original motor gave up then the idiot out doing something else stupid totalled the car to put it in the boneyard where you found it.
Those are late model thin castings not particularly desirable for serious porting.
The way you said you bought it for "the aluminium heads" leads me to ask what your current car has??? It should have the early lower flowing aluminum heads(10207643 or 10128374) that are most desirable for porting.
The Vette LT1s were 4-bolt too, as said it is the same block so no advantage there, and by the time you are making enough power to actually see benifit from 4-bolt I would want aftermarket caps, meaning a 4-bolt block is of no additional value and if you want to do splayed 4-bolt it is a bad thing.
I know you probably didn't want to hear any of that but pretending things are great that are not will not help you.
For junkyard shortblocks a nice Roadmaster, Fleetwood(both standard LT1 94-6) or Caprice(verifying LT1 as a L99 was standard) will likely mean a well cared for motor, long as the car looks like it was cared for. Heads the 95 and earlier Vettes and f-bodies are the desirable ones. All the LT1 blocks are the same casting, far as I know all the LT1 cranks are the same casting(as are other 350/305 cranks with different balance) the mid 94 and earlier stuff can have "pink" rods which are good but not quite as desirable as the powdered metal ones that replaced them in mid 94. Either way with the price of decent aftermarket stuff probably not worth reconditioning stock rods anyway.

Well...needed a donor motor to start building an all forged 355 or 383, leaning more towards 383. Also needed heads to use as core for LE3 head and cam package. This is the main reason for buying the complete motor. This way I can still keep driving my Z while I build the new motor.
And my 95 does not have aluminum heads.
