Default 383 or 400??

started to look into building a new motor for my 95 and was going to do a 383 but thought a 400 would just be plain nasty under the hood, I know what parts I would be using in a 383 build, but havn't really checked into a 400 build, for the fact that im pretty new to the machining part of the process and wasn't sure a lt1 block could be machine into a 400 or not...A machine shop would be doing the machining..what you guys think, 383, or 400??? and any input would help, but plz lets keep it positive...

most people go 383 or 396 i have heard that you can make a 409 but that is on the ragged edge of reliability

It depends on what your final goals are? Do you wanna spray , boost , or N/A. If you are going to boost I wouldn't go higher then a 383 cause the cylinder walls would be thinner and weaker. If you are going to spray I would build a solid roller 396. Hell build a solid roller 396 and run N/A I have seen some mean N/A 396's. You can always buy a Merlin Block.$$$

Sparying it was in my mind, had also thought about buying a 400sbc block but I wasn't sure I could interpret the reverse cooling setup to it so it would work with waterpump and comp...

No a sbc isn't an LT in any way accept for the internals for the most part, yes it can go in the car but it will be old style accesories and all else acept the exaust that will transfer over. That means stand alone ecm or carb. Only worth it if it no emissions and obd1 I'm getting my 396 LT built now, its close but longer stroke. ether way good luck

We have built a couple of the 4'' stoke lt1 engine.no problems with reliability if done correctly.you do have to run a small base circle cam though due to the rods coming mighty close to it.The last one we did put over 500 to the tires on pump gas and has been driven a couple of years on the street.

A 396 is all you are gonna need man. Have you ever ridden in a 396 with a solid roller? Hell a HR 396 with some badass heads/cam. A buddy of mine used to have one this thing was mean. This was N/A too running I think 11:5:1 . I can only imagine what the car could do on bottle.

The difference of a few cubic inches won't make it worth giving up reliability. Those blocks have pretty thin cylinder walls. If I were doing it, I wouldn't bore it out more than .030", I'd do a short fill of Hard Blok, and I'd concentrate on the stroke.

So you end up with the 383 or 396 as choices as noted above. You have to be careful of clearancing the block for the rod bolts, so if they really know what they are doing I would go with the 396. If they break through the block, it may not be useable again. Make sure they know they'll be buying the new block!
