Yeah I did out of the box they sucked, that was with their competition port job, lots of $$$. However I had them reworked by Eric Bradby and had a cam to match by Joe Overton and the results were astounding.

AFR's on LT1's have proven to be worth the cash if you have plans for any type of forced induction due to the extra meaty castings. The meaty castings also provide room for precise porting to your specific application. That said, I have seen LT1 and LT4 castings due the exact same for less money

I have stock-valved, hand ported and polished stock (LT1) heads on my '94. Don't have flow #'s as the gentleman who did them doesn't have a bench, but with a relatively reasonable comp cam, the combo has been good to 12.48 @ 112MPH on Drag Radials.

Now, if I could get my hands on a reasonably priced pair of LT4 pieces I would go with them in a heartbeat.

I purchased a set of the LT4 195 AFR's with the competiton CNC port work with the up graded valves and springs. My advice would be for you to purchase a set from a engine builder that can set the heads up to your combination as well as port the heads to flow what you motor will need.

The AFR heads I purchased direct from AFR and it was at least 3 months to get them. Then when I recieved them the CNC porting from AFR was crude! I found different area's in the exhaust port and intake port where the cutter missed. I called AFR and they said that happens. I figured that was pretty poor answere and after spending $2400.00 I really was expecting a great set of heads. The other thing I found out was the flow numbers they claim and I verified if there heads would be different once I recieved them and AFR said NO the flow numbers will be what is advertised. That's the farthest from the truth and I found out when I had a new motor built using these heads because the flow numbers where off by 15 cfm plus.

Like I said if I had to do over I would have purchased them from a reliable engine builder with his port work.

I put CNC Machine CNC ported heads on my LT1 and looked great and are supporting 360 RWhp and 550 ft/lbs of RWtq. I found this website helpful. I gives flow numbers for a lot of heads for the LT1.

LT1 head flow numbers

good luck with your project

No sorry, I meant a set of stock heads that I had done up by a local machine shop that I use. And so far so good, I don't have any dyno numbers yet. But I hope to soon. The LT1 project is going to be a 383 stroker, and I was thinking that the AFR's might be a bit much. Another question that I've been pondering on is what is the difference between the LT1 and LT4 heads??? I mean can't you port a set of LT1 heads to match a set of LT4????

Your best bet would be to get a set of ported LT4's. LT4's max out about 315. AFR's neeed a lot of money and time to get them to flow real numbers, ask me how I know. The short side sucks on a AFR head and needs to be welded and built back up to make it flow real good. A lot of head porters agree with this also. The LT4 has a real good design in it already.

I have seen mixxed results with afr's. If i was to do a lt1 again it would be using a set of traditional sbc heads converted over to lt1 style.. There is lots of choices out there and they work fantastic with little work to convert over.
For my turbo motor i choose brodix heads and had them ported by a very reputable shop and love the looks. can't wait to go vroom vroom though

I dunno i've been reading over on lt1tech.com that some people are happy with their AFR heads...but still have them ported again...I personally think it's a waste to order bitchin heads and pay 2500.00 for them...just to have to have them done over again....
