Default Helicoil on-car..

I was wondering how to go about fixing a couple of intake bolt holes on my motor. A couple of my intake bolts on the drivers' side, are on their last leg'. I was wanting to put a Helicoil in those holes, to fix them..How would I go about this, w/o pulling the heads off?? Anybody? Or could i tap the hole for a bigger size...

The heli coil will be fine for the intake bolts as long as it is done right. You could probally get away with doing it in the car . Use some 2" masking tape and tape off the lifter valley and intake ports on the heads and anything else that dont need metal shavings in it. fix your holes and then blow the engine off real good .

i would go to a machine shop and see if you could use one of there thread inserts and tools. much more of a permanant fix and much more durable then a helicoil.

What he said, make sure everything is taped up good, drill the holes at a lower speed to keep the chips down, pack the tap with grease, ect ect ect. My only other suggestion would be to use a vacuum instead of compressed air (but if its taped up good it shouldnt matter). Remember to use red locktite on the outside of the heli-coil so it doesnt back out later.

gsgindustrial.com has heli coils and thread inserts (or keyserts). You would probably get by with useing a helicoil. Im saying the because thread insert tools are really expensive ranging from the 150-250$ range. I was just stating that if you could get access to one id use it. Its just what we use at school (machinist technology and tool & die making) there just suppose to be permanent. But like said above if you but lock tight on the outside of the helicoil before installing it you should be fine.

If I recall correctly, some of the bolt holes are open ended, and and shavings could fall through, and into the lifter valley. So, as others have said, tape it up REALLY GOOD, and vacuum out the valley really well when you're done.
