Default lt1 383 Question

Is it possibility that all I need is a cam? The motor blew a few years ago. Stock firehawks put down about 275 rwhp. I had the motor rebuilt to a 383 and I have not seen the horsepower numbers at all. With the “383” and long tube headers, the bird dyno’s at about 285 rwhp’s now. My best guess is that the person who built the motor didn’t do anything other then new bottom end, bore, stroke and didn’t touch the top end. Could running a stock cam really kill a 383ci’s hp that much?

HEADS are key to making power, as well as the cam, adding cubes without the supporting stuff means nothing. Given the little more HP he may have even put a little more cam in it. One POPULAR engine vendor sells "440hp" 383s with poor port work and cam selection and manages to repeatedly put down 32xrwhp, and this is someone guys think highly of.

Who built the motor? What components did the builder use? Like said above just adding cubes does not add hp..You need the heads and cam to move the air...Did you have the motor built and if so why don't you know exactly what was done and why didn't the builder suggest the benefits of having the heads done and adding a cam to match the combo?

I've driven a stock headed 383. Yawn.

My 383 LT1 has mildly ported heads and a 230/236 cam. No dyno, but it feels like a high 12 second car to me (at 3900 lbs). It's "just right" for street manners to me.

and I say that in the least gay way possible.
