How to start engine with out key
How to start engine with out key the reason is becuase a guy is selling me a junked TA and he says that it turns on but he doesent have a key. I dont want to buy it then the engine is no good
Depends on the car... if its still got vats you won't have an easy time starting it.
If vats is gone prob the easiest thing would be a new $10 key/tumbler and take the time to put it in.

A 10k pot might would work. Hook it up and spin it until you can get it to fire. Don't think we should discuss hotwiring so I still say go back to swapping the switch.

Or have it tuned (good idea to begin with) and have the VATS removed 
Also, yea I suppose not all all the same ohm, but you should be able to find out.
Alternatively, as stated you can just take your vin in and get new keys with the right pill in it. That's what I'd do.

same topic sorta....Can VATS really be tuned out? I have LT1edit and there is an option in there to turn off VATS but, will it really work? I mean, I'm curious cause, I was thinking about hooking up a remote start setup someday and was told that there's tricks upon tricks to making that work with one of these cars due to the resistor in the key.
Would it really be as simple as turning off VATS in LT1edit to get around that part?

Sure, I'm sure LT1Flacon has the VATS tuned out on his since installing a VATS lock and tumbler in an older car would (I assume) be nigh impossible.

You can just pop your resistor out of the key. I had VATs disabled and a different ignition key/ column setup in my car so I just popped the resistors out of my keys and threw them away lol.
If you really wanted to see if tuning out VATS will work. Rather than getting another key made or popping out the resistor, you could always just put some electrical tape or something over the resistors and then try it... My .02
i believe its 50.00-65.00 to get the code, and vats keys are about 24.00-25.00 now. they went down in price. only problem is whats the actual possibility it is the original lock cylinder? they tend to tear up, and if it has been changed its not going to match the code. i only say this because i have changed TONS from the wires breaking off at the top of the cylinder. good luck to ya, but if the cylinder has been changed i would hate for you to buy a key for no reason. at that point you would be better off to buy a new lock cylinder, being gm doesnt recode VATS cylinders. but if you do go to the dealer to get a key, you have to have a photo ID and a printed document (example: tag registration, title... etc) to prove ownership. let me know if you need anything though
