'Security' Light Warning Stranding Me
For several times now, I'll go to the start the car and everything is fine until you turn the key, and then . . . nothing, and the SECURITY light stays on. So, what I've done is disconnect the battery, then reconnect and it's fine for a bout 5-6 starts, and then this again. Search is stuck in the mud for me, any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Lol, the same thing would happen to me every now and then. Not sure what causes it, but I had to wait two full minutes before it would go off. And disconnecting the battery didnt do anything unless i waited the alotted time period. I would also like to know how to fix this.

sounds more like a bad lock cylinder to me... the two wires that run out of the top of the lock cylinder tend to break and to intermittent... i havent seen THAT many key pellets go bad, but it is VERY VERY common for all VATS cars to go through cylinders... just my .02

I have the same deal with my car. All I do is wiggle the key in the ignition a bit to get it to work. I've tried cleaning the key and it doesn't apear to have solved anything. The security light stays on but the car does start. I know right away when it isn't gonna start by if the securty light starts to flash when I put the key in and turn the ignition to the first spot before cranking the car then I wigle the key till it stops flashing and then crank it once I have a constant light. It does anoy me that the light is on all the time though. I'm definatly gonna try the cleaning the ignition out.

This is weird, the other day this happened to me. Security light was on and I couldn't start the car. First time it has ever happened to me. I took the key out many times and tried, no luck. I shut everything off, took the key out, opened the door, waiting a few minutes, tried again and it fired right up.

Ok warning to the lucky, for the last 6 mos every once in a while when I tried to start my car the Security light would come on and I would have to wait the annoying 3-minutes for the car to start, occationaly the SECURITY light would come on while driving. I wasn't too concerned as if it came on while the engine was off, I'd wipe the key on my jeans wait three minutes the light would go out it would start and vroom off I go....
Ok well I'm driving to work and the security light starts flashing.... annoying I know but no big deal. I come out to start it after work Monday Night and the SECURITY light comes on solid for three minutes then starts to flash.... Car won't start light never goes solid nothing.... So I've been trying to find out all info I can, and I get a new key made at dealer $30 go to start it yesterday still nothing. So it's been sitting in the parking garage for 3 days and it won't freaking start!
I just watched it get loaded on a suck-truck (2.75 Miles away @ $75), after pushing out of the parking garage so off to my buddy's shop , I live 35 miles away so it's probably going to be cheaper for him to fix it than me having it towed home and jack with it for a whole weekend. Below is the excerpt from the manual.

When the PASS-Key II system senses that someone is
using the wrong key, it shuts down the vehicle’s starter
and fuel systems. For about three minutes, the starter
won’t work and fuel won’t go to the engine. If someone
tries to start your vehicle again or uses another key
during this time, the vehicle will not start. This
discourages someone from randomly trying different
keys with different resistor pellets in an attempt to
make a match.
The ignition key must be clean and dry before it’s
inserted in the ignition or the engine may not start.
If the engine does not start
and the SECURITY light
stays on when you try to
start the vehicle, the key
may be dirty or wet. Turn
the ignition off.
Clean and dry the key. Wait about three minutes and try
again. The SECURITY light may remain on during this
time. If the starter still won’t work, and the key appears
to be clean and dry, wait about three minutes and try
another ignition key. At this time, you may also want
to check the fuses (see “Fuses and Circuit Breakers” in
the Index). If the starter won’t work with the other key,
your vehicle needs service. If your vehicle does start,
the first ignition key may be faulty. See your dealer
or a locksmith who can service the PASS-Key II.
If you accidentally use a key that has a damaged or
missing resistor pellet, the starter won’t work. The
SECURITY light will flash. But you don’t have to
wait three minutes before trying another ignition key.
See your dealer or a locksmith who can service the
PASS-Key II to have a new key made.
If you’re ever driving and the SECURITY light comes on
and stays on, you will be able to restart your engine if you
turn it off. Your PASS-Key II system, however, is not
working properly and must be serviced by your dealer.
Your vehicle is not protected by the PASS-Key II system.

Below is a link to some good info from shbox site. Specifically how the system works and why the lite either stays on, or blinks, etc.. Your problem looks like a bad ignition switch intermittently not making or opening up the contact with the resistor in the key. http://shbox.com/1/pass_key.html. The TDM sends a signal to the PCM to allow injectors to pick, controls the security indicator lighting sequences and picks the TDR to allow the starter solenoid to pick.

This use to happen to me like one out of every 5-6 times when I start the car for the past year (did not drive the car that much in the past year). Finally took 15 minutes of my time and followed shoe box's instructions and car has been running fine for over 5 weeks now. Same thing use to occur on my friends 97z and stranded him a few years back, he towed the car home and did the same Vats by pass and the problem never occurred again. He drove the car for 3 more years without any issues before selling it. Very easy and Cheap fix.
My 2 cents
