Default thermostat replacement,bleeder valve?

i changed my first thermostat today and a guy at work said there is a bleeder valve to get the air out of the system and if i didnt do it my car would run hot cause of the lack of pressure and water couldnt circulate. is this true or is he jsut full of ****? and if there is a valve where is it.

there is a hex nipple sticking out of the thermostat housing neck towards the hose. bleed it from there, but dont get the opti wet.
