you cant tell from the vin number... you MIGHT be able to tell from the rpo codes or you MIGHT be able to tell by the casting number on the block... but the only way to know for sure is to drop the pan and look inside.

You can't tell from RPO Codes in the box..it only says Engine type.
Pretty much you have to drop the Pan bro..

either block would have the same casting number.
a sure bet would be a "Y" in the vin code.

there is no y code in the vin, however this summer I pulled the pan and it is a 4 bolt main engine. I'm starting to wonder if this is not the original engine, it felt very strong even when it was stock

A very few F-body's got the 4-bolt blocks and it's only because they ran out of 2-bolt blocks at the time. I have a friend who found his original block in a Formula was a 4-bolt.

Not necessarily.. if it was a Factory replacement more than likely it was a 4-Bolt.

I agree...As far as I know, only the 'Vettes got 4 bolt blocks. It's been a few years since I had the pan off my '96 Z-28, but I'm pretty sure that I saw only 2 bolts mains when I was in there....

No. GM never "officially" offered the 4-bolt in the f-body, so the vin would not have been changed. Unless, of course, the vin also indicates it's a corvette.

I'm pretty sure my car isn't a vette lol. Hmmm any other thoughts on this issue? I bought this car from the second owner, car appeared totally stock when I first purchased it, does have four bolt mains. Anybody have a ny ties to a mid 90's gm engineer?

For a Corvette, yes. A Y will never be in the Body designation spot in a F-body Vin Code cause it's an F-body,

Just accept that you're one of the lucky few f-body owners that got a factory 4-bolt main.
