Go big is ok if you have the heads to use the cam to it's advantage, all the supporting mods, the right gear and converter if it's an auto. But on a mild bolt on street car, nothing wrong with a smaller cam. Rather have that then some 12.70 turd that sounds mean as ****, but drives like garbage and cant get out of its own way. Some of the best running stock headed cars, didnt have GM847s or 306s they had Crane 227s or x.e 503s.

Just because its one of the biggest selling cams of all time doesn't mean its good. Its not a bad cam but they're much better choices. The only reason it has sold so many is because lazy people and newbs look in their summit catalog or wherever and buy the kit so they dont have to pick and choose all the right parts and because its relatively cheap and just assume its sick because its called the "hot cam" when in reality it utilizes out of date lazy lobes.

The same guy who held the cam-only record with the 227 beat his own record using a custom grind camshaft that he swapped the 227 out for.

I understand the point that you are trying to make, but you're wrong. You are not smarter than the mass of people who run the hotcam just because you don't prefer it. It's a great all around cam for many applications. Are there better choices? That is dependent on the build in question man, there is no cam that is a great choice or horrible choice straight across the board because every setup is different. It may not be a great choice for you, but for the next guy it might be exactly what he is looking for. You are generalizing something that can't be generalized just because you have a personal bias.
Not many cams have the life-span of the hotcam, numbers don't lie. The years it has been out and the sheer demand for it speaks for itself.

YUP I could care less what people say about the "Hot Cam" cause 90% of the shi* on the road I will lay the smack down on. Plus it's still running perfect after plenty of mashing miles. For the 10% that beat me...awesome. I like to get smoked once and a while.

Ok I agree with some things you say but...I am not trying to be biased here just stating the facts. The hot cam came out what 12-15 years ago? Back in the '90's and early '00's that was a heck of a cam, and I guarantee it would in my car if say this was 1998. It utilized the latest and greatest lobe technology and on top of that there weren't as many other available camshafts during that time like there is now which would attribute to high sales. However this is 2008, the hot cam has lazy out of date lobes making it a more out of the date camshaft. If some of the good off the-shelfs now were out when the hot cam first came out and utilized similar marketing or should I say were put out there enough then they would have sold just as many. But just because it has had records sales or so you claim with no proof (but I do believe somewhat) doesn't mean its that great of a camshaft. Its certainly not bad but its certainly not the best. Also its not necessarily the best for anyone when the option to go custom is always there which is in most cases is the optimal choice. The cam I have is proven as hell and 9 out of 10 times it out powers the hot cam with similar setup cars using a very similar duration but hasn't made record sales so does that mean its not good? I will also reiterate the part that attributes to such high sales or so you claim of the hot cam. That would be people with minimal cam knowledge who open their summit catalog and see lt4 "hot cam" and get excited and order it, I know from experience. Before I became a member here and did my research I assumed the hot cam was god and almost purchased the kit.

I did my research too, and the Hotcam was the ticket for me. Been in my daily driver for over 3 years, I've only adjusted the rockers ONCE, it was cheaper than any other name-brand cam, and it passed emissions cleaner than when it had the stock cam in it.

IMO, a "custom" cam is a cam you had built specifically for your motor and nobody else has it. LE cams, since anyone can buy one, is an off-the-shelf cam.

Just like the LT4 topend kit right? Thats a huge horse power maker for well over 2 grand isnt it????

Its marketing junk...

A aftermarket heads n cam package would blow it out of the water for cheaper and you know that

This pretty much sums it up:

"It may not be a great choice for you, but for the next guy it might be exactly what he is looking for."

That would be the case for any camshaft on the earth available for an LT1. Still it utilizes old lazy *** lobes so in general terms its not up to par with the newer stuff so to speak.

i have heard through various sources that the xfi series has some fairly extreme lobes that put unecessary wear on the valvetrain, and causes premature wear on the springs.

They were designed for the Beehive springs, which is also what I'am running...no problems thus far....and I run it pretty hard..
