I'm sure the only regret is power gained for money spent.

from what i've read (and i've read a lot haha), 383s make quite a bit more than 30hp over a 355, if both are built right.

Yea, on a fully stock motor its only like 5hp more for 383 vs 355. If you get all the accommodating goodies for a 383 it then makes great power.

The thing is most LT1 383's are only making 400-430@the wheels. The majority of the head/cam cars are now making that now. Every now and then someone will post a stroker combo that actually makes power but there few and far between, that needs to change.

If you're going to be installing a new crank with a rebuild, I see no reason not to get the extra CI. but if you're going to just rebuild and don't need a crank it may not be worth the money.

The cost of building a 383ci is not that high, you can get a scat 9000 crank for less than $300, reuse the factory rods, you can get pistons for $400 and then get machine shop to clearance the block and balance the rotating assm. for like $300 to $400.

If you're building a performance motor the only thing you would be paying extra is for the crank and clearancing.

I bet everyone is going to give me HELL about the scat 9000 cast crank, but I've put out over 600hp on a 3800lb car and never had a problem with it.

i guess i will go ahead and bite the bullet and purchase the forged 383 since it is only a couple of hundred dollars more than a forged 355. i only have le1 heads and a hotcam kit right now. hopefully next year i can put more money in the top end. i guess it will make a nice daily driver till then. any opinions?

yes, my opinion is i love the 30th anniversary edition camaro ss.

and my second opinion is you could just upgrade the cam and valve springs, the heads wil be OK for now. not optimal but workable. the additional cost of the cam on top of the short block is pretty minimal.

when i purchase another vehicle later on then i will put more money in the top end and make the power that a 383 is supposed to make. i figured i would just build the bottom for right now and use the vehicle as my daily driver.

well, i could just upgrade the cam and springs but if i do, i would have (want) to buy rockers, pushrods, guideplates, etc. i figured that the hotcam kit would be okay for now as a daily driver until i purchase another vehicle. i know i won't make killer numbers but it should make some really good torque throughout the rpm range until about 5900. i don't think i would really need to shift any higher for street use right?
