Talking Thinking of the strip - Advise?

Hey guys/gals got a question for ya??? I have never taken my car to the strip to see what she'll do in the 14 years I've owned her, even after the motor update, don't ask why - I don't know??? However, the question I have is I am thinking of getting her out to see what she'll do and my brother suggested I start at the 1/8 mile to get my reaction times down and get use to the track. I currently have about 450-500 RWH and am pretty sure I'm not gonna get any good launches with my street tires 275 40z-17 (Goodyear Eagle F-1's) on 17X9.5 rims. Should I invest in some strip tires (suggestions?) and I still have my stock rims lying around 16x8's would these work fine for strip tires (know it will look dumb)? Lastly, I am running 3.73 gears with the T/A cover and bearing preload kit and I know the Fbodys are notorious for weak rearends, should I be worried? Any advise is helpful.

You WILL need rear tires. As for your rear end, cross your fingers and ease into it...Look up tire threads and you'll get a good opinion on street and track tires. Check this thread out.

Thanks, so it's ok to go with the 16x8's even though it will look goofy? I figure I already have these rims might as well use em. Lastly, your opinion on my rear and what should I launch at as I have an M6?

It's my understanding that the Tranny usually goes before the rear end. The 4L60E is not the strongest out there, by far. ANd you've got 450-500 rwhp? That's what I'd be worried about, not the rear end. Then again, you said you've got an M6 so I can't talk alot about that. I'm A4 but go to the "Drag Racing Tech" forum and search launch rpm. That should tell you everything you need to know.

Good luck with her.

Not on an M6... The T56 is a stout tranny and you won't break it before destroying that 10 bolt. I'd probably invest in a good set of tires like some drag radials and learn to feather the clutch out to avoid destroying the rear. Clutch dumps on radials at your power levels will shell that 10 bolt. So I'd say start your launching at off idle to try and cut your best 60' times, get used to the strip, and avoid shock loading the rearend. If you enjoy drag racing go out and put a 9" or a 12 bolt in it, buy some slicks and a good clutch and start going nuts with clutch dumps at 5000RPMS.... But until then get the basics down. Couple of tips for you...

1. Drive around the water box then back in.... Typically driving thru the water box is reserved for full on race cars or morons in Civics.... If you have a street car drive around it then back your tires into the water box. Rotate your tires over in the water. Pull forward about 4-5 feet and let your tires heat up until they start smoking then pull forward. Do not blast past the tree and then back up. It wastes time and pisses the people off behind you... Stop prior to turning on any prestage or stage bulbs.... then start creeping up into the beams....

2. Watch whenever possible others that have more experience with similar setups.... Try to catch on to what they are doing to improve your own skills...

3. Don't get discouraged... John Force wasn't always the drag racer he is today... You have to start somewhere. So if your car isn't running what you think it's capable of it usually has something to do with the driver... To this day my car will have certain days where it won't run like it's supposed to and i've been dragracing for 12+ years.... Sh*t happens so let it.... but don't get down on yourself... Whether you run 15.5 or 10.5 or 8.5 dragracing is intoxicating.... I ran 15.4 in my first "drag" car and I was still hooked.....

Good luck

You might want to put an air bag in the passenger side rear spring.
