Default Oil Pressure problems

whenever i crank my car it runs at about 30 to 40 psi cold. once it gets warmed up it drops to about 6-10 idling and about 20 cruising. i have tested it with a mechanical gauge and it showed the same thing. i know that lt1s usually run with lower oil pressure but this is a good bit lower than it used to run. could this be a sign of a weak pump or is it time for a rebuild?

What weight oil are you running? Is it the same as in the past? Same brand of oil filter? How many miles on the engine? Overall, how does the car run?

In another vein, does the oil pressure fluctuate wildly when accelerating or braking? If it did, maybe the oil pump pickup is either clogged or fallen off the pump....

car has 119000 miles on it.
i run castrol gtx 10w-40 since ive had the car for 3 years
car dont seem to run as strong as it used to, but it does have a skip now.
the oil does fluctuate a lot when stopping and going. i didnt even think about the pickup. i guess i can pull the pan off this weekend and check it as much as i dont want to...

I have the exact same problem, except I haven't found an answer as to why it's happening. I have the added problem that the car smokes. It's not a real thick smoke nor does the smoke stick around long, but definitely smokes more than it should. The smoke smells a little bit like fuel. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and the coolant temp sensor and connector. Car info:
96 Pontiac Firebird Formula 5.7L LT1
121K miles
6-speed manual
k/n filter
possible cam replacement
engine code of p0100 (Mass Air Flow Sensor Circuit Insufficient Activity)

I would bet there is something which aided in keeping pressure in the oiling system does not have the same tolerance as it once did and is letting excessive oil escape. Worn or spun bearings are the most common occurrence to low oil pressure. It would appear your engine may have to come apart. If you want, you can drive it for awhile like this, but it will cause more damage in the long run to the point of ruining most or all of your rotating assembly.
