Default Vin Numbers?

I have an LT1 block from a 94 vette in my el camino. I went on a hunt to find the vin numbers on the block so I can legally register it to my car and could not locate them. A Buddy of mine said that the only vin number for the vehicle is INSIDE the block, behind the heads. Is that true?

The VIN # is usually only partial on the engine and some are hard to find ..
it should be on the pad by the front cover where the ID code is stamped ..
I have seen some with #s stamped on the side rail by the pan also... but I don't believe the entire VIN is stamped into any block due to production schedules and timing they usually stamp them as the car is assembled and only use four or six numbers as ID...
sorry i can't be more help ...

I don't get it... I just did a full 383 build on my LTX and I am trying to go through the proper procedures. So I can prove its not stolen and it belongs with my car now.

Essentially there is no way to prove it is or isn't stolen since the VIN isn't stamped on the motor? The only thing stock on my motor is the block...

So what the heck would the motor department want from me so they can link it to my car? Just a receipt of my motor build?

Don't know if this helps, but the VIN derivative should be stamped on the side/back of the block near the oil filter and the same on the tranny near the same location. See the pic below (Courtesy of Shbox.com):
