because of the c-clip design you'll probably get some end play. i can't remember how much, however if you hear a clunk then i would look eslewhere. have you checked what kind of play you have in your LCA's? when does the clunk occur? that could help diagnose where the clunk is coming from. it's possible the bushings in your lca's are going south...

If I recall, LCA bushings and tranny mounts are popular components to **** the bed.
When I replaced my tranny mount I never noticed the excessive play in the gear shift (or if there was any) however the mount was dry rotted to **** and was almost torn in half.

well i put it back together and drove it today and so far the clunk has gone away. the clunk you hear when you shift gears is just your drivline slack. i did check the u-joints and they were good i think the fluid was bad and maybe a spider gear was locked up or something. but the axle play is there still.

U-joints, bearings, and too much play between the pinion and ring gear can give you that "clunk" noise. Also things to consider are the exhaust mount on the tail shaft, transmission mount, motor mounts, and all the bushings to the suspension.
