what kind of hp will this maro put out?
I'm thinking about getting a 1996 Chevrolet Camaro SS. It has the LT1 engine, auto tranny, B4C police package, and a functional ram air hood. The car only has 41,500 miles on it. I'm just looking for an estimate. I'm not sure what kind of gears are in it but I assume 2.73 or 3.42? Otherwise it is a stock car that looks to be taken very well care of. Also is $10,000 a good price for this? Thanks for your help guys.
1st, it can't be both an SS and a B4C... B4C cop cars had NO Z28 markings at all... they were base camaros... 2nd, if its an auto, it has 3.23 gears... and stock SS's put out 305hp... price seems a bit high...
Ok my bad its an ss with a police chip and upgraded exhaust from the factory is what the guy told me. I just assumed it was the B4C. Sorry for the mix up. thanks for the quick reply.
Stock SS's did not put out 305 hp, that was a GM claim of the power at the crank. The SS's actually put out anywhere between 265-275 to the wheels. Also, "chips" arent available for the 96 year model, only the 93 Speed Density models who utilized a different ECU could have "chips". The 94 and later models did away with that computer system and LT1 Edit had to be used for any computer modifications.
Thanks Gangly. Then this will be a bone stock camaro. Sounds like fun. What kind of exhaust and headers should I go with? I was thinking corsa cat-back and some Hooker LT headers with a mufflex y pipe? Sound good? Will the hooker LT's and the y pipe be emissions legal in texas? Will I pass inspection? Thanks guys
SS's were RATED at 305hp, just like regular Z28's were rated at 285hp... no one said anything about wheel hp... and there were no differences in tuning between regular and cop cars, B4C's were rated at 285 like Z28's, extra hp of SS came from ram air, ported manifolds and the 3" SLP exhaust...
correct, ss's were rated at 305, was just making sure he knew that wasnt actual horsepower. And no, SS's didnt have ported manifolds(intake or exhaust) but they did have a functional Ram Air system and a slightly different exahust system provided by SLP Engineering(muffler and piping). Hookers are by far the best Bang for the buck Long Tube header system. Corsa is a nice cat back but not the most efficient and far to expensive. Surprisingly enough, the Hooker Cat back is one of the best a long with the Borla adjustable plate catback system. The Borla will generally make 2-3 hp more, but is considerably more costly (approx $650 as opposed to Hookers $300-$350).

the 96-97 year model LT1's across the board had slightly better flowing exhaust manifold ports, a different cam, and different catalytic converter setup than the 93-95 models but that was unadvertised from the factory and came in every V8 F-Body(z28, formula, Trans AM, WS6 and SS) and not just the SS or WS6 models. other than that, I have never read, seen, or heard of higher flowing exhaust manifolds specified entirely to the SS and WS6 options...part numbers were the same and ports appeared to be the same across the board for all v8 specific models. Im almost positive the information you have on the exhaust manifolds is incorrect, but there is no need for us to get in a pissing contest over something this trivial. Do you have any solid proof? If so, I would love to see/read them, not trying to be ****, I just want to be corrected if I'm wrong and I'll be the first to admit it if I am.

When I added headers to my 96 WS.6 I dyno'd 288 RWHP. CNC Ported LT4 Heads, LT4 Intake, Holley 52mm TB, 220/224 544/544 cam and custom tuning yeilded 360 RWHP.

Hope this give you some idea of what to expect with a LT1.

Even though it dont have the HP of an LS1, the 96 and 97 SS and WS.6 are considerably more rare than its LS1 sibling.
as a rule of thumb, most shops with a dyno add in a 10 percent drivetrain loss for manual and 15 precent for auto, which I believe would prove your assumption concerning GM underestimating the power of the motors hold very true. GM has done this for a long time, and I for one aint complainin'
