I'm pretty sure you have to run a thermostat because you want the engine to get up to operating temp. There is such a thing as running the engine too cool.

Carbed vehicles I'd say you can get away with it easily, but computer controlled you'll need to. Or at least tune it so it doesn't expect the car to get warmer and stick in open loop.

the tstat also acts as a restriction (the reason some racers run the plate with a hole in it) which allows coolant enough time to ditch the heat in the radiator. taking out the restriction would probably make you run hotter.

I agree!

BUT most here won't believe that. They prefer to believe without a thermostat their car will catch a cold in the summer.

Note to self return engine blanket.

I got my car with no t stat. I'd like to slap the guy I got it from. The car never heated up in the wnter and always ran hot in the summer.

175* is pretty good, If you dont run a thermostat most likely you will run pretty hot during the summer. I know it doesnt make a lot of since but thats how it works.

It does, since the coolant is flowing through the motor so fast it can't warm up and do it's job. Basically just as FlamingChicken said.
