I checked the egr valve today by pushing in on the diaphram, instantly the idle droped. Checked all of the wiring to the solenoid and everything looked good there. So i think it's the solenoid thats bad now.

Threw this code as my '97Z started to run out of gas. Seems like the easiest thing to try first is to push the diaphragm in and see how the idle responds. My question is how do you do that? I've never handled an egr valve before so are you just pushing on the whole piece towards the intake? It was too dark to see anything but I was hoping that some of you guys have had to deal with this already-thanks in advance.

-Holy s**t. Why the hell are these things so goddamn expensive?!

Holy thread from the dead lol!! If I recall correctly there are openings in the top of the egr valve... you should be able to fit your finger in there and press on the diaphram.

I figure why open up a new thread-yours fit my questions perfectly lol. In any case, I'm looking at pictures of the EGR, shoebox's to be exact, and I don't see any openings of any kind. I guess I'll just have to feel around. Oh, and GM may as well have mounted this thing on the bellhousing for crying out loud...

Alright so I know where it is but how are you guys "pushing the diaphragm" to test it? It feels like a solid piece to me with no moving external parts...

Look at the pic in the link. See the "vents" on the bottom side of the egr housing. Stick your finger in there and push while the engine is running.

Got it. And wouldn't you know it? I found it, the idle stumbled, and as I was thinking about my next move the light went off LOL. Thanks for helping me out though man. I'll keep this page on hand in case that nasty EGR ever acts up again...

Yeeeeah so, this code keeps going on and off. Weird thing is, when I manually push the diaphragm on the EGR the SES light goes away. A little bit later, the code comes back. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but if the idle stumbles when you push the EGR diaphragm, that means the EGR itself is fine, right? Also, when I manually push on the EGR valve I notice it sticks a bit-is this normal or is the diaphragm supposed to move smoothly?

So I took the EGR off today to clean it, but asides from being dirty it didn't seem plugged up or anything like that. Again, pressing down on the diaphragm I notice there's some resistance-is it supposed to be that way, or is the diaphragm supposed to move easily? I'm pretty sure the hoses are good to go, from the EGR to the solenoid, and the solenoid to the intake. I even checked to see if there was good vacuum from the intake while the engine was running and it's there. Any other ideas guys, or could the EGR just be bad. Or, could the solenoid be bad. What else can go wrong with this infernal system? What I wouldn't give for a damn Tech 2 scan tool. Thanks again guys...

Well I finally got around to working on this. I applied vacuum to the EGR itself with a hand pump to get a reaction out of the car, and I was pretty sure the idle stumbled a little, so I decided that the EGR vacuum solenoid must be the problem. I put a new one in today but I've still got the SES. Looks like I'll be changing out that EGR valve anyway...
