Hmm, ok...

You never did say if it was a large or small starter. Either way I would say it might be mis-shimmed, or sorry, rather NEEDS to be shimmed.

That one is the big one. Get the smaller one next time

Your style on Left, LT1 "mini" on Right. The Mini works for almost all SBC as well and in our testing (me and buddies) torque-ier too.

Apparently you can use the Corvette one as well, which is apparently has much more torque.

Since that starter is most likely a reman it was probably seized to begin with. I'm thinking the starter was the bad ground which caused your **** to melt.
If the postive wire was to touch the solenoid wire all it would do is engage the starter.

That may be true, but the ease of installing/removing that mini starter is worth it And it'll last longer.

I really think those old biggies need shims. Don't know what to tell you.

Tis odd, but it's like my transmission. Buddy adjusted the kickdown (correctly mind you) and then my tranny went down hill from there. Took it in to a shop (very reputable place) and had a tech take it for a drive and he said it was pretty much gone and the kickdown as pretty much perfect, but that it was most likely a coincidence.
