LT1's a knockin'
LT1's a knockin' I'm now a semi-proud owner of two 4th gen f-bodies. I bought a 97 Trans Am yesterday that has a "knock" in the engine. The car has been sitting for a couple of years since he didn't feel like messing with it so I think I got a pretty good deal on it even if it needs some engine work. I'm just curious as to where to look first. The guy said that it still ran so he started it up so I could hear it. At idle it has a steady knock that sounded more like it was coming from the rear of the engine or the torque converter. He brought it up off of idle to about 1300 rpm's and the knock all but disapeared. The car has 85k on it and appears to have been run pretty hard but is still bone stock. Any thoughts? Maybe better oil pressure was quieting it down?

from my experience with knocking engines it's been either the rockers aren't torqued correctly or are loosening. the other is the lifters are sticking in the seats. those are the only two problems ive ever had with nocking engines.
It sounds as if it's coming from behind the engine and towards the bottom so I'm hoping and thinking the flexplate is broken or the torque converter is loose. I guess I'll pull the starter and take a look.
