Exclamation overheating problem?

i have a 94 Z-28 6-speed. i have an overheating problem, the car loses coolant when i drive it but there is no leaks, i didn't trust the stock temp gauge because it stayed at 180, so i bought a mechanical temp gauge and hooked it up and cranked the car up and let it run for 10 minutes and it buried the gauge at 270 degrees! the car doesn't run bad or smoke or anything. what could be causing this?

If the car is loosing coolant on a regular basis (a good amount) and there are no leaks visible (not on the bottom of the car, not on the ground) then chances are you have a blown head gasket OR all that coolant is leaking somewhere and burning off. But it is more likely the head gasket considering you are overheating aswell.

I would guess a blown headgasket as well if you've run it over 270 degrees many times...

well there is no water in the oil or oil in the coolant. wouldn't a car with a blown headgasket run bad or smoke? my car runs great and only has 62,000 original miles on it, it just boils the coolant i guess, the car only leaks coolant when you drive it.

Thats exactly what a headgasket would do. If the hole is small enough in the gasket, it will boil the coolant but might not make it run bad or smoke too badly. The bigger the hole the worse things will get (coolant in oil, running bad, smoking ect...).

I ran my car hot last year and warped the heads, it was losing just a little water but it ran hot and the coolent would boil. I guess it was about the same effect as a blown headgasket.

no steam out the exhaust. i borrowed one of those pressure testers from autozone and pressurized the cooling system at 18 psi and the needle very slowly went down but there is no external coolant leaks so i guess it could be a headgasket.

Have you reset the factory setting on the electric fans . The factory settings turn the fans on at around 225 degrees . If you couple that with a water leak then you can have double trouble . Make sure your radiator cap is good also . Good luck .

Check the simple stuff first, As said make sure you fans are coming on, bleed the system again via both bleed valves, then finally remove your T-stat to see if it might be sticking....

well i have no cats so the check engine light is on which turns on the fans whenever the motor is running so the fans aren't the problem.
