Default Replacing exh manifold gasket

Im going to be tackling this project soon cause i have a leak which im hoping is making the o2 sensors lean and causing my car running rich problem. Its on the passenger side which of course has the least amount of room. Anyways whats the best way to a approach this? I know im gonna have to take the alternator off but what else to make this go by as easy as possible? thanks

Sounds like a great time to get some headers. Alternator will have to come off, plugs and wires, and spray the **** out of the studs with PB Blaster before you go trying to pull them off.

One VERY important thing to remember....The heads are aluminum, and although I'm pretty sure the exhaust manifold bolts holes have steel thread inserts, there IS a possibility they don't. So, if you strip a thread, you'll ruin your day. Therefore, be VERY patient, and take your time!

IIRC, the torque value for the OE manifold bolts is 32 ft./lbs.

^^^ oh yeah baby.... clean those threads out with solvent and air. Use a wire brush on all the bolts to clean the threads off (or pay up and get some nice new header bolts). Obviously clean your gasket surfaces thoroughly. Finally, like stated, be careful of over torquing.

Oh, and I've been told to snug up the bolts and then tighten starting from the middle working outward.... any comments on that anyone?

I've never had trouble torquing in any way.

Don't know if you NEED them on alu heads, but we never use the gaskets when it's just stock chev manifolds. Never had a leak problem either.

My LT-1 came from the factory with them. In fact, that's the gasket I used to "port match" them....

All of them did. I'm saying that we've had much more luck running factory manifolds with NO gasket, than with them, either because the factory ones finally gave out and are leaking or we're putting manifolds back on a motor. Unless your heads, or manifold, are really warped, they should expand and seal up nicely. At least, they do just that on the iron heads.

Yes i would agree that this would be a perfect time to put headers on the car but i live in california so long tubes are out of the question and long tubes are the only type of header i would go with.

I think he's referring to a standard SBC with iron heads and manifolds. On the circle track cars I used to work on, we never used gaskets (Had to use manifolds instead of headers for the particular class). A little bit different situation because those cars pretty much get built and tore up pretty quick, so for that class we never spent any money we did have to.

For the record, use the gaskets on the LT1.

Bam, use the gaskets. Even if its an iron head engine. As stated above, the only reason someone might not run them is for a competition where the engine is getting torn down between every run.

obviously formula350 tears apart his engine every time he drives it. This takes him a long time because his only tools are rocks and sticks, he's very primitive in that way
