Default SS Ram Air vs CAI

Hi All,

Here is my very first post.

A few months ago I got a 96 Z28 convertible and recently came across an SS hood for 150.00 which I am planning to put on. My question is this: Should I spring the extra 250 for the SS ram air setup or should I get a Cold Air intake (moroso, k&n, etc) and just leave the hood open to cool the engine bay?

From what Ive read (which seems to make sense) is that the SS setups are not nearly as good as the WS6 but how do the SS setups compare to a Cold Air Intake?

thanks for your help

Tom

IM not real sure of exact numbers, but on a near stock car i dont see a ram air system making much of a difference, especially at lower speeds. There are some people that swear by a ram air system but there are a lot of guys making big power with a regular cold air intake. Id save the 250 to do something else with.

Save the money and buy the CAI. I have a SS and if you notice where the factory air box sits in the hood there is a baffle (for rain) that really cuts down on the airflow. Can't say for aftermarket hoods but a real GM SS hood will have that baffle and since I did not want to cut that out I sprung for the CAI and did notice a differance.

If you had a Trans Am, i'd say the airbox would be great, but I don't like how the SS airbox curves around so much. If it were I, I would have a nice CAI.

FYI. I went from an SLP CAI to the WS6 Ram Air box, and did not notice any difference, but I am still using a paper filter, might notice something with a K&N. Even with no performance gain, I think it is well worth it. Looks way cooler, I can say the hood is actually functional and say I have ram air, easy to change filter, easier to clean TB and stuff. etc etc
