Default Pro 5.0 Install, problems with 2nd gear..

So i have just installed my pro 5.0 Shifter yesterday and I am having some trouble with my 2nd gear. About half of the time I try to get into 2nd, the gears grind.. The other half I can get it to engage but I feel like I have to jam it in. I tried to start moving in second gear and it seemed to work ok, then I did it again and the gear wasnt fully engaged and popped out. What do you think the issue is?? Could my stopper bolt be one thread to far in? I am not a huge tranny guy so anything will help. Thanks.

If that's all that's happened since the change, it's probably the shifter stop bolt. You don't need stops on the T56, it has internal stops.

Did you notice if the shifter cup was worn/broken?

No the cup seemed fine, the stop bolt was the first thing I thought of but I was unaware that the T-56 had internal stops. Thanks for the info. Should I just take out the stop bolt completely?

I did not know that either. I have been running the stops for 10 years. Guess I will pull them out.

How would you set the stop bolts on a tranny that didnt have internal stops?

With the car off and e-brake on, ease the shifter in 2nd gear, and run up the stop bolt to just touching the shifter, then tighten the lock nut. Repeat for 3rd gear.

Those bolts in the shifter base are to prevent you from bending the internal shift forks in the tranny. I have installed a few 5.0 shifter and all you need to do is set the ebrake in the car firmly put the car into 2nd gear with the shifter stop backed out. Then run the stop bolt up against the shifter till snug and back off between a 1/4 and 1/2 turn. In my opinion it doesn't make alot of since to buy a nice aftermarket shifter then toss half of it in the trash or not use it. Hope you get it adjusted right.

Yup.. Most people just back them off the shifter .050-.060" to make sure they aren't blocking the shifts, but keep them on the shifter in case it's ever sold/moved to another trans that needs the stops..

The shift forks bend from quick/hard shifts, bending against the force of the sliders trying to engage the gear. The internal stops prevent the shifter from going beyond the travel of the fork and any chance of bending them that way..

You don't need any shifter stops in the T56 like you do in other transmissions.

This may seem silly, but check the console clearance as well. Sometimes the console gets gets re-installed in a position where it interferes with the shift lever & causes a shifting problem.
