Default no 6th gear

i bought my car knowing i don't have 6th. was told it needs a syncro. while driving i can put it into 6th, but theres nothing there. grinds a little like its tring to find something. 5th works fine. to my understanding they use the same syncro so you think its the gear itself?

Sounds like the engagement teeth on the 6th drive gear, have been chewed/broken off. You'll need a new synchro and a new 6th gear. I have a complete '93 (great shape) 5/6 extension in my spare parts pile, give me a shout if interested.

Gadzooks!!

93lt1M6z:

I agree with 85MikeTPI that the clutching teeth on the 6th drive gear are probably damaged. We stock and sell all the parts for the your trans. Replacing 6th gear does not require a complete teardown. You can download the Shop Manual from our website. Recommend that you do a partial teardown before ordering parts.

I agree, and I'm sure you've seen alot more 6th gear problems than I have.. They symptoms point to the engagement teeth, but 6th doesn't usually get that much abuse on the engagement.

Other thought would be if both the 5/6 fork was bent, and has missing pads, but even then it should have slight engagement.

Does the shifter handle feel that it moves into 6th, as deep as it does into 2nd and 4th?

I'm thinking the 6th gear side of the fork is worn down and its not going into 6th gear enough of the way myself . I just don't see it stripping off the teeth on 6th gear like that .

Yup... But for the original poster, it sounds like the trans tail will need to be opened up regardless, to diag the issue and get replacement parts..

you will have to drop the trans iirc, and i would tear it down completely and look at the whole trans not just 6th, because there is something else lurking imo

I'd say to tear the whole thing down and go through it. if you have the resources to take the back off, the whole think isnt much harder. if you just had to save as much time as possible, you can do 6th gear by just pulling the back off, but if something(or someone, lol) happened to tear up 6th gear, something else is either fucked or really close to it, so u might as well go through the whole thing.
