strange sound question?
strange sound question? My clutch and transmission seem to be working ok, but I'm hearing a weird sound. It's a spec stage 3 that has about 15K miles on it but no track passes and really never even been dumped. When I let the clutch out slowly from a stop I hear a squeeling sound. Like to things are rubbing on each other while one is turning. I know that's how a clutch works, but why would it make this sound. Also it really only seems to do it when it's cold.
I had this same exact issue with my Spec 3. Typically it means something has built up or gotten onto the friction disc (fluid, clutch dust, etc) and you just need to clean it off. Take it out and come to a complete stop, bring the RPMs way up and dump the clutch running it through the top of second (don't crash, though, if your car is all over the road). A couple hard dumps and it will clear the material right off, then it won't squeal anymore.
In truth, it isn't unusual to hear some sound during engagement when using a carbon-semi-metallic disc. This results from the interaction of the metal face on the flywheel and the metallic compoun of the disc. I am betting that you have seen this occur relative to temperature too. Cooler temps generally cause this sound to be more evident. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks for the advice guys. Sounds like hopefully I just need to have a little fun tonight and dump the clutch a few times. Spec - 01 you are right that it is worse when it's cold outside, but it has just started making this sound in the last week so I'm hoping it's just some dust built up. Thanks guys
I had a noise that was prevalent when cold, but then got worse. I had my clutch builder look at my clutch today and he gave it a clean bill of health. He told me it sounded like my pilot bushing was spinning on occasion. Could possibly be your pilot bushing.
