Default Help with a schizophrenic clutch please

2002 SS, LS7 clutch, new McLeod adj master, new GM slave cylinder, new fluid about 10 times over...

I can't figure this thing out.
- It works fine, then it drops to the floor with only about an inch of actual clutch engagement/disengagement. Then it works again.
- Sometimes if I pump the pedal while driving the amount of 'slack' gets worse, sometimes it gets better.
- If it has 'slack,' the clutch will slip. If all is well with the pressure/return, the clutch holds.
- If I romp on the car and cause the clutch to slip a little, almost inevitably it works fine for the next few miles.
- Once I've driven 15 miles or so, it seems to continue working as a clutch should. (It's worse when everything is cool).
- I haven't had the clutch actually stick to the floor yet, but if it wasn't for the rinky-dink return spring it would have...
- No leaks. Fluid level never changes.

I've bled it manually. I've bled it with a power bleeder. I've tried different fluid.

I've read the sticking clutch pedal write-up - nothing new there...

The only thing I can come up with is that there is still air in the system somehow. My next step, I think, is to drop the transmission and bench bleed everything. I suppose that something could be wrong with the master or slave, but I would think that the issue would be more consistent.

Any ideas? This thing is driving me batty!

Pedal inconsistency is actually the calling card of hydraulic issues. It seems that you have done the normal things to get air out of the system but if you have an issue relative to a Slave or Master that is bleeding by internally you can bleed the system until you are blue in the face and get no better results that you have. It sounds like it is time for a new Slave and Master. Let me know what you find after doing this.

If you are romping on the car, and the clutch is slipping, you just answered your question right there. Hydraulics have nothing to do with your clutch when it's fully engaged. Unless you left a shim on the slave or something causing the slave to hold the clutch disengaged partially. I've got the same clutch in my car with just stock hydraulics and I have no problems at all.

I agree that it is something hydraulic. Maybe the master or the slave is defective. Either way - I'm going to put the stock master back in tonight to see if that sheds any light... PITA but I won't have to drop the tranny yet.

I'll post back if this helps or not.

Well - I put the stock master cylinder back in the car, re-bled and went driving last night. Problem solved.

Guess I need to get in touch with McLeod now and find out why this new master has problems.
