Question steel fork ??

has any1 ever bent or messed up a 3/4 steel shift fork b4 . thats what my mechanic who built the tranny thinks . its because im having probs w/ both gears grinding and jumping out of gear. the trans was rebuilt 15,000 miles ago w/ steel fork , had the syncro redone and went w/ billet keys .

any other ideas

Were the fork pads replaced with bronze pads, during the rebuild? I've never seen a bent steel fork, and find it hard to believe that one could bend without other intense damage being done at the same time. What gear is it jumping out of? Was the pilot bearing replaced at the same time as the rebuild?

not sure about the pilot bearing but its jumping uot of 4th terribly ( as to the point i dont have a 4th anymore and 3rd grinds like hell) but the only time it grinds is at higher rpms and when coasting down the road in neutral and you attempt to put it back in gear it grinds like a bitch even w/ the clutch in . only thing when sitting still w/ the clutch pushed in the tranny goes through the gears smooth as glass and when you let the pdeal out in all gears its smmoth except in 3rd and 4th it still kicks itself out

Doesn't sound like a bent fork to me. Double check for clutch drag, then plan on pulling the trans. Check the pilot bearing first, and if everything's ok, plan on opening up the trans again..

You won't bent or break the steel fork. It is possible to wear down the plastic fork pads and start to wear into the actual steel. If its got bronze fork pads, I doubt you would wear them out very quickly. As for the jumping out of 4th gear, its not real common but I have seen it. I usually change the input shaft and the 3-4 slider and the issue goes away. As Mike said, check to make sure the pilot bearing is in place and in good shape. Also check your dowel pins on the back of the block for damage or if one is missing.
