grinding in 1st

grinding in 1st When I try to accelerate @ high rpms in 1st from a dead stop, something starts to grind. 
The motor mounts are OK and I recently replaced the tranny mount. It didn't start grinding untill I put new tires on it: a lot stickier tires. The old ones would just turn over. It doesn't make any grinding noise in any other situation. Shifts just fine into all gears. I drive a 96' z28 with 97K miles on it. I bought it with 86K. I have no clue if the clutch was ever changed. This idiot didn't even think of asking.

From your notes above I suspect what you are calling grinding is a clutch slip. Once engaged/ shifted into gear, a manual will not slip. It will not carry any torque if the gears are broken but it will not slip( carry only SOME torque).
