Default Do I really need that shifter boot???

Okay heres the deal. I just picked up a 95 z28 m6. The car has a B&m Ripper short throw shifter. I wanted to have it cut down some to run a pistol grip handle. Make a long story short. I really dont want to remove the whole console - Because I have gauges in the cubby pod,etc that will need to be removed as well. I could actaully get to the shifter just by removing the plastic console shifter 6speed plate. But I'm having a hard time removing the rubber boot because of the location of the screws. Can I just cut that out and remove that??? I know the purpose is to keep dirt, etc out but the car dont see rain or snow. Just a weekend summer time car. Just wondering if I need it
