scatter shield?
Is it needed to install the clutch properly? NO
Is it required by the NHRA if you start running slicks? YES
Is it a nice piece of saftey equipement? YES
Do you like your feet? YES
Not busting nuts, just saying that it depends on what you plan to do with the car. If you are going to hit the dragstrip with sticky tires pretty often, then I'd invest in one. If you are simply replacing the clutch and don't really drive the car hard, then a scattershield might be overkill. Some dragstrip tech inspectors will look/ask for it, and others won't but either way a clutch letting go ain't pretty and tear up lots of stuff.
I run a McCleod unit in my car. When I installed it years ago there weren't many options. It required a little bit of grinding to make it fit properly, but nothing major. I think Quick Time Performance now offers one that is much closer to a true bolt-on.

If you do decide to run one, make sure you run the block plate. Lots of guys don't run the block plate and only run the "can", the block plate is just as important in containing the clutch in the event of a failure.
Good luck.

I like my feet, and I beat the **** out of my car, so it was a no brainer for me.
