Default leather boot off?

I thought the leather shifter boot on the m6 cars was afixed to the console, saw some pics of it detached though...

How do I get it out without breaking any plastic bits?

Take the center console (piece with the cup holder) out and I think it's just bolted down.

No you don't have to take the whole console or even the whole top off. The shift boot is held in place with just a plastic retainer they just un clip carefully most of them will break because they are old

If they break - no big deal! The plastic pieces are made of ABS plastic and can be welded with ABS cement. (You can get this at better home improvement stores and commercial plumbing supplies.) Just apply to both pieces, hold for a couple of minutes, let cure for 24 hours, and you are as good as new. The weld is just as strong as the original plastic.
