Problems. Help!
I bought this car used with 45k on it. It now has 63k. I've had problems with it since the second day I had it....
1.) Problem: I casually shift from third gear to fourth, put my foot on the gas and it pops out of gear. It only happens when shiftint to fourth... and no other gears.
Question: Could this be a synchronizer?
2.) Problem: I start the car in the morning, and release the clutch and I hear a rattling noise. This also happens when I am in neutral at a stop light or wherever I may be idling. I push the clutch in and the rattle stops... I slow let the clutch out and it does not come back.
Question: Does this sound like a throw out bearing... or is my whole clutch assembly screwed?
3.) Problem: A high pitched whinning that gets higher as I accelerate... I push the clutch in and it goes away.
Question: Is my Transmission going out on me???
4.) Problem: I don't know for sure cause I only checked it once but when checking my oil the other day a couple days after an oil change I noticed... or there 'seemed' to be the hint scent of gas on my oil dipstick.
Question: Is this possible... if so and there is gas in my oil I'm assuming that the rings are bad????
I've NEVER EVER had this many problems with a car EVER, especially after only putting 18k on it. Hell, I had my 96 Camaro 3 years put 85k on it and the only thing I ever replaced was a alternator. What am I doing wrong... or did I just get a freakin' Lemon?
Also, are these things that a weekend mechanic could fix? I can do a cam install (helped a friend do my first one) and have dropped a tranny in my driveway and done converter/tranny cooler on my A4. so I am fairly knowledgable about these cars.

Yes Most likely or the Shift fork or both.

Sounds like it to me.

Very Possibly the tranny needs some attention. like in question 1

Not nesisarily the Rings. does it smoke during excelleration?

Maybe or the previous Owner ran the **** out of it.

All but the tranny, unless you have a press and a really good set of snap ring pliers.
Where are you located? city, state. I rebuild them all the time.
