Default clutch going out?

I have a 2000 Trans Am. This has only happened once, here's the reason why I think I need a new clutch: clutch pedal was mushy like it wasn't engaging at all, had to force it in and out of gear, and of course the smell. But this is what gets me, while that was happening my car would try to die. I'd had to rev it to keep it running. But this happens sometimes with 1st and 3rd gear: either doesn't want to in into gear or pops out of gear.

Sounds more like a hydraulic problem. If the clutch doesn't slip and has a good solid engagement but you have difficulties getting in and out of gear and smell the clutch, the pressure plate isn't fully releasing. The number one cause is hydraulic issues and its usually the slave to be specific but can also be caused by the master.

if you cook the clutch isn't it possible you weaken the fingers on the PP?
