Default Clutch question

I have a 2002 firebird with a 6 speed. this weekend my girl was driving and this chick pulled in front of us so my girl in a panic jammed the clutch. So what we have is that when she pushes in the clutch sometimes the pedal doesnt retun and wont let her change gears until she turns the car off. Once she turns the car off and takes it out of gear and pulls the pedal back out, then she can go on about her buisness for a little while and then it will do it again. When I pulled the cap to the clucth cylinder reservoir and it has a lot of pieces of what appears to be rubber (seal) fragments. I believe that it has blown the slave cylinder but I would like some ideas from you savey dudes as well. The car has 190,000 miles ish and has never had any work done to the clutch whatsoever so for me it's a miracle that the pressure plate has never been changed but I want to just replace what it needs for now for finacial reasons so I dont want to go pulling everything off the car and just replace it even though that might have to be the end result but I would like to try regaurdless.

thanks for your advice in advance.

You could start by replacing the clutch master cylinder. Its runs $70ish from the local parts store. If you're lucky, that may fix it. Inevitably, you'll probably end of having to pull the trans and replace the clutch and slave too. With 190k miles, all of the clutch components are on borrowed time. So its best to really do it right and replace everything.
It may not be as expensive as you think. I can give you a few very affordable options.
1) Stock replacement "LS6" clutch with 2000 miles on it (includes flywheel) & I can throw in a new pilot bearing & alignment tool - $180 shipped
or
2) New Diamond Clutch Stage 1 $369 shipped and resurface the flywheel at a local machine shop for $30-40. This clutch is much stronger than stock and is made to last 200k miles.

Either way, you will have to replace the slave cylinder if you end up doing a clutch install. I sell them for $80 or you can pick one up at your local parts store for the same price.

We also offer a number of options for this application (7 different single-disc clutch options) and both steel and aluminum flywheels. Take a look at the second set of parts listed on the link below and let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks,

Do your self a favor and don't buy a SPEC clutch. If in doubt do a google search on spec clutch failure. You will find more failure posts than you find kudos! Also SPEC doesnt fully stand behind their product. They will make you ship faulty products to them on your dime and hide under the "Its Our Policy" bullcrap. A Quality company that stands behind their products are always quick to Ship a new quality piece and pay for the shipping of the bad unit back to them. Spec refuses to acknowledge the fact that their products are bad and live in the fantasy world that "we have sold 25k products and they are all good" they live in the dark!

But your problem sounds like a slave or master failure.
