Trans fluid change question.

Trans fluid change question. So I'm going to drain and fill the trans tomorrow and was looking at the fill plug today. Looks like it would be a PITA so I talked to a friend that said you can fill it through the shifter. Is this right? If so, just unbolt the Pro 5.0 and pour it strait in?
Encase your wondering I'm going to use just plain old Advance Auto Dex III fluid. Plan on having the trans warmed over by Tick in the next year so not gonna worry about buying expensive fluids now.
