help!! 3rd gear problem!!!! is this clutch or trans?? ok, last weekend i to the t/a to the track to get some new times. first 3 runs were on all motor. the car left the line ok, and shifted into 2nd good, the problem comes at 3rd. first 2 runs, it wouldn't let me shift into 3rd. almost like shoving my hand into a wall. so after 2 embarrassing runs, i decided that it was gona shift into 3rd weather it liked it or not. so on the 3rd pass, i made the 3rd shift, but there was no gear there. WTF!!! shifter went into position, but when i let out on the clutch, the car reved like it was in neutral. so i figured i prob. needed the drill mod. today, i went and bought a mittyvac, and did the drill mod. at first i thought i might have solved the problem. took the car for a drive after i finished, and med-hard throttle it shifts fine. so i thought thats great!! i stopped and launched the car 3/4 throttle, 2nd gear good, shift the 3rd, thats good. so i decided that i neded to give it a good hard shift and see what happens. so i did the same 3200rpm launch, 6k 2nd shift ok, 6k third shift ok BUT no gear, damn it shifted into third but doesnt pull only revs. what the hell. is it my clutch, a bent shift fork, or what!! this just started, and i want to get it fixed before i cause some serious damage. thanks for any and all ideas
oh, the car only has 46k miles and 24k of them it was babied. started modding about 3k miles ago. stock clutch

Wtf!!! what do i need to put in a post in order to get a reply in these posts???????????? it has been a week, 7 days, almost 50 people have looked at this post, and not one reply, comment, or even a tough luck go fu_k ur self. well for those that look, i'm still in need of help. drove the car today, and i still have the 3rd gear problem. i did the drill mod last week, and after a disapointing drive, i let the car sit for the week. i have been asking friends here at home, ( no f-body owners) what could cause this, but no one has any idea. i had one friend ask if when i shifted to 3rd and there was no gear there, if it came back when the rpms came down, so i tried it today. and the answer is no. when i shift to 3rd at over 5800 rpms, it goes into the location of 3rd gear, but there is no gear there. i left it in , and let the rpms come down, and could rev the gas without the car pulling. after a few revs, it was hard to get out of third, but not really hard, and i shifted right back into 3rd at probably 1500rpm, it went in fine and started to pull the car like there was no problem. if i shift early, or short shift even on a hard pull, it goes in fine and pulls hard. i only have the missing 3rd at high rpm shifts. what the hell is causing this!!!!! bent shift fork?? someone chime in please!!!!
thank you! finally i get some sort of reply. i was starting to wonder if it was me or my pc. do u have that #. i'm willing to talk to anyone that can point me in the right direction, or that has had this problem.
Well two things to help you.
#1 NO MORE BLOCK WRITING. It's hard to concentrate on figuring out what is going on. Spacing it out will make a tremendous difference on response rate. Also if posted on Friday evening, sometimes you may not get a response until Monday morning. It happens.
#2 IF your issue is specific to one gear selection. It's the transmission and 3rd gear is a VERY common gear to have issues as it is the most common to miss shift on. These transmissions take 1 or 2 good miss shift to start having issues.
Stop racing it, either take it to a shop or calm down on 6k shifts. Also when fixed invest in a good clutch master cyl, new clutch and hydraulics. Also a shift light will be VERY helpful.

If you're making the power in your sig then your stock clutch is definitely slipping and can't handle the heat from the launch and not being able to fully disengage during gear changes. Feel free to call me if you have any questions. Chris, 817-750-2000
If the car is able to shift into other gears without issue but you find that 3rd will not accept aggressive shifts then it much more likley that the problem is relative to the transmission or even a shifter that is not maintaining its position. Take it to a capable shop and have them take a look.

i had a friend ride with me sunday and showed him what it is doing. if i short shift(5800 or less), it goes into gear fine, but when i get the rpms up, the shifter goes into position, only there is no gear there.
made 3 pulls, and only 1 of them i shifted at 6200. thats the 1 i had problems on.
the shifter goes into the third gear slot, but nothing. i let it stay in place, untill the rpm's came down to idle speed, and then eased on the gas, but still nothing.
one thing that was different this time, it was hard to get out of gear(position) after i did my rpm experiment.
of course my friend had no idea, he said "thats not right, must be something wrong" lol!!! no ****!! was my reply.
guess its time to take to a shop, but do i take the whole car and demo the problem, or just pull the trans, and hope they see something during the teardown??

Because this could be shifter related or an issue inside the trans I would just take the whole car. Of course you could diagnose a shifter issue on your own by digging into it yourself which could save you some money in the long run.
Here's a test, rev it up in gear to ~6k rpm and see if the car creeps. It's a disengagement issue as the diaphragm springs get weak from the heat from slippage and your synchros in your tranny can only help so much at higher rpms when trying to shift. With that being said if your trans isn't already screwed up because of this problem, it will be soon.

as far as the clutch test, does it need to be warm, ( should i drive it some before i try the 6k creep test)? the car has been sitting since sun.
also as far as the shifter being the problem, i had thought about trying to pop it out and look at it, but i really dont know what to look for. i have never pulled a shifter before. the car has the stock hurst shifter in it, if that makes a diference.
