Default 5th gear?

I've searched the forum and it appears that most people have 5/6 problems. I only have a 5th gear problem...that is I just can't shift in to it. I though I lost the synchro, but it doesn't grind or anything it just won't go in. Makes no noise at all. Are there problems in the shifter linkage that can happen or am I still looking at a trans tear down?

Thanks in advance and I'll keep searching through posts.

The narrow width fork pads tend to break.

You gonna do it yourself?

I was thinking about it, but I've got 12 fused vertabrae in my back and wrestling trannies is not fun. Plus I just don't have time to stasrt and stay on it until it's done. There's a good shop here in town and I may take the easy way out.
The car only has 20k miles on it and other than the 5th gear that I tagged on a bad shift everything else works great.

I'm thinking maybe $1,200 for a decent repair???? I'm hoping less.

How hard is it to pull? I just finished doing a rear end job and it was fun, but a pain.Very painful to be under the car trying to take the carrier in and out.

I got it down to .007" back lash and 12 inch pounds of rotating torque and a nice contact pattern. ITs smooth and quiet.

Sounds like it needs torn down. Prolly a issue with the shift fork or 5th gear itself. Most of the time when the gear itself or the syncro is junk they make noise. Worst part of disassble is pulling the 5/6 drive gear off the mainshaft.

Yea, once you get into a case, it should have a full rebuild and inspection of other hard parts and make sure the magnets get cleaned out.
