Question Spec 3 flywheel options???

I was wondering what the benefits/disadvantages are for choosing either the Billet Steel or Aluminum flywheel when ordering the Spec 3? I remember reading some where that the weight of the flywheel can create problems if it doesn't weigh the right amount.

The car is a 2000 Firebird Firehawk with about 68k on it. The engine is pretty much stock. The car is primarily used for road racing, so it's just an upgraded suspension, racing seats and harnesses. I'm planning on purchasing an additional engine and trans of eBay and at that time I will sink some dough into making the engine a little more beefy. Hence the reason I want to make sure the clutch can handle what I throw at it.

The hydraulics’ are shot and while I have the transmission down I figured I would do the clutch as well. The slave is getting replaced with the '01 slave and a McLeod adj. master. I plan on doing the drill mod to the line as well. From what I've read, even changing out the slave and master won’t really fix the spongy feeling in the clutch until this is done. Is that assumption correct?

Any ideas and pointers are greatly appreciated.

If your big into road racing, go with the aluminum. If your not go with the billet, or get your stocker re-surfaced.

The AL is better for AutoX, while the Steel Billet is better for drag racing. You could always just have your Stock Flywheel resurfaced.

Are there any differences in the way each of them feel when engaging? Sounds like aluminum is the better way to go. Anything that helps to drop a few pounds always is a good idea. Just trying to justify the additional $200 bucks.

Thanks for your advice.

With the aluminum FW, you may not like driving it with the new clutch, IMO. You'll need to gas the **** out of it to get going. Consider staying with steel. The SPEC is much more aggressive grabbing than stock. The upgraded hydraulics combined with the new clutch got rid of all of my spongy feeling.

Sounds like the best plan would be just to get the flywheel resurfaced. The weather isn't to good yet to start this, but I'll post updates or additional questions when I start it. Thanks!
