whining / grinding ......?

whining / grinding ......? as im driving in 1st gear i step on the gas and it would sound like if my tranny was whining.. is that normal? also if i keep my hand on the shifter i can hear and feel grinding very very lightly only if i put pressure on it.. hurst shifter btw.. if that even matters.. what can be done to fix this? havent checked the level of fluids.. and how do i?
