Default Reverse problems

Would anyone happen to know why my shifter pops out of gear and grinds when i start reversing? I have to hold my shifter every time I reverse or else it pops out of gear. Car is a 98 Trans Am M6. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Need a rebuild. The reverse has 1 blocker that is made out of bronze and if you don't slow down the trans before shifting into it, it can grind. Over time the engagement teeth wears to a point that it will pop out

The fork pads would be the first place I'd look. My reverse did the same thing and the gear teeth were destroyed. The Syncro slider was done too. But hte bronze blocker was in pretty good shape. All because of crappy *** $5 fork pads.

Fortunately you can do the work with the trans in the car as you only have to remove the tail housing. Once apart you need to inspect the teeth on the gears, syncro engagement teeth and spacers and bearings for wear. My 1-4 are already bronze but I am adding bronze to the 5/6 and rev forks as well.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Car has 195000 on the clock. Guess it's time for a Tick Lvl 2 upgrade huh? Haha

Certainly, just be ready for other damage with those kind of miles. I would also consider replacing ALL bearings on a high mileage trans like that.
