Question on why my tranny failed ...
what would cause that end cap cap to fail???
Needle bearings are small - maybe 1/16" diameter, about 1/2" long - and they all go on the shaft, between gears and the shaft. The biggest cause for failure there would be lack of fluid / overheating.
But I am not aware of any that have an 'end cap'. Which bearing are you talking about?
Just curious.
As far as the fluid being low ... i had just had it serviced and filled with Redline D4 ATF.
would this type of failure be caused by road coursing??? dyno time?? drag racing?? how about a rear end collision????
The needle bearings go between the gears and the mainshaft (and the 5-6 shaft). They're not the blocker rings. The needle bearings ride in their own little plastic carrier. The needle bearings ride on the shaft, the gears ride on the needle bearings.
In that manual, the needle bearings are:
Page 2-2: parts 72, 110, 127
Page 2-3: parts 21, 24, 40
Road coarsing? I could see it... heat. Drag racing? Naah. Dyno? Probably not. Rear end collision? Maybe.
I was just thinking that the blocker ring has some responsibility of holding the needle bearings in place ... looks like i was wrong. so, i suppose the plastic carrier broke?? It was either 21 or 24 ... possibly both since they told me it was on the 3-4 gear set.
reason i asked about the rear collision, is that I had just had the car repaired for a rear end collision. I was stopped and the guy hit me going 10-20 mph. he was in a Tundra. I just find it weird that it faild with in weeks of the collision.
