Question Question on why my tranny failed ...

Last weekend my tranny failed. It took a while to get it torn apart, but it turned out to be a needle bearing end cap. And, as you can imagine the needle bearings spread out all over the internals causing all sorts of damage. Now, here's the question ...

what would cause that end cap cap to fail???

Needle bearing end cap... can you be more specific?

Needle bearings are small - maybe 1/16" diameter, about 1/2" long - and they all go on the shaft, between gears and the shaft. The biggest cause for failure there would be lack of fluid / overheating.

But I am not aware of any that have an 'end cap'. Which bearing are you talking about?

Just curious.

I'm with camaroholic on this one, the only "needle" style bearings are what several of the gears ride on, they are held by plastic retainers, which if the fluid was low, would probably end up melting letting the bearings come loose, and then since they would be able to go all around the bearing surface like all to one side or the other instead of encompasing the shaft, you would more than likely end up eating that gear and the one driving it, not to mention lots of other parts. If you need the PDF T56 manual, you can get it here http://www.tremec.com/English/media/...ice_Manual.pdf I've been inside several of these transmissions, they are pretty easy to work on, and unless you are trying to get the bearing off the input shaft, I haven't had any need for a press, only needed another person to help hold everything together while driving the pieces down on the splined mainshaft.

yeah ... i downloaded the manual last night and I was looking around for needle bearings. looks like the plastic ring you're talking about is the blocker ring?? Looks that way to me.

As far as the fluid being low ... i had just had it serviced and filled with Redline D4 ATF.

would this type of failure be caused by road coursing??? dyno time?? drag racing?? how about a rear end collision????

How much fluid did they put in?

The needle bearings go between the gears and the mainshaft (and the 5-6 shaft). They're not the blocker rings. The needle bearings ride in their own little plastic carrier. The needle bearings ride on the shaft, the gears ride on the needle bearings.

In that manual, the needle bearings are:

Page 2-2: parts 72, 110, 127
Page 2-3: parts 21, 24, 40

Road coarsing? I could see it... heat. Drag racing? Naah. Dyno? Probably not. Rear end collision? Maybe.

the put in "a little over 4 quarts" i provided them 5 since the manual calls for 4.1, so i thought it was ok.

I was just thinking that the blocker ring has some responsibility of holding the needle bearings in place ... looks like i was wrong. so, i suppose the plastic carrier broke?? It was either 21 or 24 ... possibly both since they told me it was on the 3-4 gear set.

reason i asked about the rear collision, is that I had just had the car repaired for a rear end collision. I was stopped and the guy hit me going 10-20 mph. he was in a Tundra. I just find it weird that it faild with in weeks of the collision.
